Alkylated resveratrol prodrugs and metabolites as potential therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases

The team led by Dr. Morales has synthesized alkylated resveratrol prodrugs to improve antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Resveratrol, a plant-based phenol, is already known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Nevertheless, its problems in absorbance prevented its extensive use. Taking into account the unmet medical need in the neurodegenerative field, and the fact that more and more neurodegenerative CNS diseases have pro-inflammatory implications, there is a chase for an adequate anti-inflammatory and non-toxic compound. We are thrilled to show the incredible work of Dr. Morales, who thanks to structural modifications obtained new compounds with improved neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory capacities. The results of the different structures have been interpreted within two categories: Best in-vivo neuroprotection and lowest toxicity in zebrafish larvae. For this, the readouts comprehended measurements of cytotoxicity, neuroprotection and anti-inflammatory capacity. After the screen, the compound with the highest neuroprotective capacity has then been tested in a mouse model with Huntington’s disease, showing notable results, as it was able to reduce severity of several phenotypes.
