Summary:

Natural compounds found in nature are used widely as an alternative to the commercial drugs. As an example, there are many potential cardioprotectors amongst these compounds. The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the most advanced and studied area of natural compounds reaching thousands of years of history. Nevertheless, only recently developed techniques in biotechnology are enabling a quantitative and qualitative research of the real therapeutic effects of TCM.

The concept of the InnoTCM project is to apply an innovative approach of profiling the TCM herb extracts by using Zebrafish as a model organism in High Throughput Screening (HTS) manner. 100 compounds will be isolated and characterised proving their potential therapeutic activities by both the LongHua Hospital (Shanghai, China). Later on, the efficacy and toxicity of these compounds will be screened by ZeClinics for further validation of the biomedical relevance in the fields of cardiovascular and neural disorders. Finally, the underlying mechanism study of active extracts/fraction/compounds in zebrafish and cell models will be performed. That way, a novel High Throughput Screening (HTS) technique will be applied in a whole-animal context in zebrafish for the first time in the World.
